LEGS is looking for a consultant to research and write a short Technical Brief on the role of LEGS in complex emergencies.
LEGS provides internationally recognized approaches and tools for supporting livestock-dependent communities during crises. This Technical Brief will focus on how LEGS can contribute to protecting livelihoods in increasingly complex emergencies, ranging from protracted conflicts in South Sudan and Somalia to crises in middle-income and industrialized nations like Syria and Ukraine.
The purpose of the Brief is to review the role of LEGS guidance in protecting livestock-related livelihoods, including the approaches required by humanitarian workers to work safely and effectively in these contexts.
Complex emergencies often result in livestock deaths, destroyed feed stores, disrupted access routes, and unsafe conditions for livestock movement. Services like animal health and feed supplies are also severely impacted, compounding the challenges faced by both communities and humanitarian responders. Gender roles and livestock management practices often shift as families adapt to displacement, resource scarcity, and loss of family members.
The brief will apply LEGS principles as a framework for analysing the challenges and opportunities of livestock interventions during complex emergencies. It will also include case studies highlighting practical examples and evidence of cost-benefit outcomes in such scenarios.
