New LEGS/SEADS Joint Assessment Tool combines crop & livestock assessments, reducing time, resources and community burden

By 7th August 2024September 19th, 2024News

A groundbreaking new tool has been released to make emergency crop and livestock needs assessments more streamlined. Developed jointly by the Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) and the Standards for Supporting Agricultural Livelihoods in Emergencies (SEADS), the Joint Assessment Tool (JAT) integrates assessment processes for both crop and livestock production, promoting a comprehensive understanding of agricultural production and livelihoods in crisis-affected areas. Two standards in just one tool!

Benefits of the new tool:

  • Holistic Approach: The JAT aims to enhance food security and resilience in vulnerable communities by providing a comprehensive and inclusive tool for emergency agricultural assessments.
  • Saving Resources: This holistic approach will improve the efficiency of assessments, reducing the time and resources required while minimising the burden on affected communities and frontline workers.
  • Synergy Identification: By adopting the JAT, humanitarians can deliver more targeted and effective responses, ensuring that vital linkages between crop and livestock production are seen, leading to more effective response strategies.

The tool’s development has been a collaborative effort, tested in Malawi with promising results that highlight its potential to transform agricultural crisis responses worldwide.

Support to use the JAT:

To help users get acquainted with the JAT, a briefing webinar will be held on 3rd October, 10:00 BST. The webinar will offer insights into how the tool can be implemented, with lessons learned from the field testing in Malawi.
  • Register for the webinar via Zoom.
  • Those interested in learning more about the tool and its development and testing can read a blog post by one of its key contributors.
